Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information the LatinLearn app ("LatinLearn", "we", "us") collects, why we collect it, and the choices and rights you have. LatinLearn is an educational app suitable for all ages. We have written this policy in plain English and describe only the data we actually handle.

Who is responsible for your data

LatinLearn is run by Daniel Nolan-Neylan, a sole trader in the United Kingdom, who is the data controller for everything described here.

Information we collect

• Email address. Used to create and sign in to your account.
• Display name (optional). A name you may choose to personalise your experience.
• Sign in with Apple identifier. If you sign in with Apple, we receive the identifier Apple provides, which may include an Apple private-relay email address that forwards to you without revealing your real address.
• Learning progress and lesson activity. The lessons you complete, your answers, and related progress so we can teach effectively and sync your progress across your devices.
• Streak data. Your current streak, longest streak, and active learning days, used to encourage consistent practice.
• User preferences and sharing controls. Toggles that control what is shared with friends (your streak, activity, reactions, and friend request notifications) and whether you appear in friend suggestions.
• Friends and reactions. Friend requests, accepted friends, and reactions you exchange with other users in the friends feature.
• Messages you send us. If you email support, or ask to join a waiting list, we keep your message for a limited period so we can answer it and follow up.
• Your app language. The instruction language you choose in Settings, so lessons and email reach you in that language on every device.
• Device language and platform. The language your device is set to when you first sign in and when you last used the app, and whether you are on iPhone, iPad or the web. We use this to decide which languages to translate the course into, and to send you email in the right one.
• Basic device and diagnostic information. Limited technical details — app version, the time you last used the app, and error and diagnostic data — that help us keep the app working reliably.

How we use your information

We use the information above solely to provide, maintain, and improve the learning service: to create and secure your account, to teach Latin, to record and sync your learning progress across your devices, and to diagnose and fix problems.

Why we are allowed to use it

Under the UK and EU GDPR we need a legal basis for each way we process your data. Ours are:

• To perform our contract with you. Creating and securing your account, teaching Latin, recording and syncing your progress, running the friends feature you switched on, and sending you the account emails the service depends on — the sign-in code, the welcome, and replies to you.
• Our legitimate interests. Keeping the app working and secure, diagnosing faults, understanding which languages to teach the course in, and telling existing learners about LatinLearn itself. You can object to any of these, and you can switch announcement email off at any time without giving a reason.
• Legal obligation. The limited records we have to keep even after an account is deleted.

Email we send you

Some email is part of the service and cannot be turned off while you have an account: your sign-in code, your welcome message, and our replies when you write to us. Separately we may email you about LatinLearn — new material, or a language becoming available. Every one of those carries a one-click unsubscribe, and unsubscribing is permanent until you ask us to resume. We send email in the language you chose in the app, or the language your device was set to if you have not chosen one.

Friends and discoverability

LatinLearn includes an optional friends feature. You can only be suggested to other users as a friend if you are a friend of a friend—there is no user search. You can add friends by sharing an invite link or by sending a friend request to a specific email address. The Show me as a suggested friend setting controls whether you appear in friend suggestions: when it is off, other learners will not be shown you as someone they may know. Separately, you can turn sharing of your streak, activity, reactions, and friend request notifications on or off independently. Friend connections and reactions are stored so you and your friends can see your mutual network and interactions. There is no messaging between users—the only interaction is a small fixed set of emoji reactions, and reactions expire automatically after 30 days.

Payments and subscriptions

Subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple through your Apple ID. We never receive or store your card or payment details. Apple shares your subscription status with us (for example, whether your subscription is active) so we can unlock the right features. To manage or cancel a subscription, use your Apple ID settings.

What we do not do

• We do not show advertising in the app.
• We do not sell or share your personal data with third parties for marketing.
• We do not use third-party advertising or cross-app tracking.

Storage, syncing and where your data is held

Your account and learning progress are stored on our servers so that your progress is available and consistent across the devices where you sign in. We apply reasonable measures to protect this information.

Those servers are in the United Kingdom (London). If you are in the European Economic Area, your data therefore leaves the EEA: the European Commission has adopted an adequacy decision for the United Kingdom, and that decision is the basis for the transfer. Email is sent through Amazon Web Services, and payments, where they apply, are handled entirely by Apple.

Data retention

We keep your account and associated data (including lesson progress, streak data, preferences, and friend connections) for as long as your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your personal data and friend connections, subject to any limited records we must retain to meet legal obligations. Before you create an account, if you join a waiting list, we hold your email address, along with your name and the message you sent. We remove the entry once you create your account, once the list has served its purpose, or at any time if you ask us to.

Deleting your account and data

You can request deletion of your account and associated personal data at any time by emailing support@latinlearn.app. We will action your request and confirm once it is complete.

This website

latinlearn.app sets no cookies and does not track you. Each page tells our server that someone whose browser is set to a given language looked at the site; the server adds one to a count for that day and that language, and nothing identifying is sent or kept. We use it to decide which languages to translate the course into.

Children

LatinLearn is an educational app intended to be suitable for all ages (rated 4+). We do not collect more information than is needed to run the learning service, and we do not use the data for advertising or tracking.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR, including the right to:

• access the personal data we hold about you;
• correct inaccurate or incomplete data;
• request deletion of your data;
• receive your data in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format;
• object to processing we carry out for our legitimate interests;
• ask us to restrict our processing of your data while a question is resolved;
• withdraw consent, where our processing relied on it, without affecting the lawfulness of the processing carried out before you withdrew it.

To exercise any of these rights, write to us at the address below; we will answer within one month. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority — in the United Kingdom the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk), and in the European Economic Area the authority for the country you live in.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
